Julian Murphy has been interviewed by CultBox last week and they’ve been so kind to ask him my question regarding Gwen in Season 5:

@angelcoulbynet and @tami2205 ask: Will Gwen be more present in Series 5 now that she’s queen and will we get any back story on Gwen?
“I would say yes to both. In Series 5 time has passed. This is now the established court of Arthur and Guinevere is now Queen, so you see her in a wildly different role to before. And yes, we do return to her family.”

When Merlin returns to our Saturday nights later this year, it will open with a two-parter and follow the show’s tradition of jumping forward in time. “All the characters will have moved on a lot,” explains Merlin co-creator Johnny Capps, “and we will see that Gwen is now the Queen of Camelot and has a very different role than she’s had in previous seasons. When we start series 5 I think everone will be surprised where all the characters are.”

Now that the former maid has fulfilled Morgana’s visions of becoming royalty despite several thwarted attempts to prevent it, Gwen will play a more prominent role as Arthur’s confidant. For those concerned that this might affect the friendship between Merlin and Arthur, though, they needn’t be worried.

“I don’t think it will change the relationship between them, because Gwen and Merlin have always been close, and there’s been a bond there,” says Julian Murphy. “I hope it will make it a greater dynamic; three often shakes it up and makes it richer, and without it trying to, I think the writing will do that.”

It doesn’t seem like love will be on the cards for Merlin, though, at least not yet…. “It’s interesting with Merlin,” says Murphy, “because historically and in the legends – although there are legends that relate to certain romances and seduction – I think in our consciousness he’s a curiously non-romantic figure. In our mind he’s never associated with women, and I guess we stay true to that, but we’d never rule it out. and there are some interesting stories about Merlin being seduced away from the path.”

Now finishing its fourth season, BBC One and Syfy Channel’s Merlin has been a widely accepted, family-oriented fantasy show about the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Roundtable. What sets Merlin apart from most other television and theatrical versions of the King Arthur legend is that it’s told from the perspective of a young Merlin, the wizard who becomes Arthur’s best friend and confidant.

Another thing that sets Merlin apart is its use of a biracial Guinevere “Gwen” (played by Angel Coulby), who begins as a servant to Lady Morgana (Katie McGrath), is caught up in a love triangle between Lancelot (Santiago Cabrera) and Prince Arthur (James Bradley), and will eventually become King Arthur’s wife and the Queen of Camelot.

The first trailer of Dancing on the Edge is finally out! Here’s the YouTube version, but you can find the HD ones HERE.

Award-winning dramatist Stephen Poliakoff (The Lost Prince; Close My Eyes) blows open the volatile world of 1930s London, in a story about a black jazz band’s rise to success, before violence and prejudice brings it crashing back to earth.

Set in an extraordinary period of immense change, the Louis Lester Band arrives at the forefront of an emerging musical movement: jazz. As the band grows in popularity and starts to mix with the upper classes, the intoxicating combination of music, money and parties pull the characters into a glamorous but perilous world. Soon the band begins to feel immune from the prejudice hovering beneath the surface of society, but the sudden death of one of the band members creates a catastrophic turn in their fortunes. They immediately find themselves confronted by betrayal, and their privileged position is quickly torn away from them as they begin to discover who their friends really are. A stellar cast including Chiwetel Ejiofor (American Gangster; Salt), John Goodman (The Big Lebowski; The Artist), Matthew Goode (A Single Man; Brideshead Revisited) and Jacqueline Bisset (Bullitt) star in this explosive new drama, where for a moment music transcends the divisions of class and race, until fear and hate once again tear them apart. Screencaps will be added as soon as I can get a better version of the video to cap :)

Merlin co-creators Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy have given an update on the status of Series 5.

Speaking at the 2012 SFX Weekender, the duo confirmed the show will be back on the BBC in Autumn.

“We’re currently in full scale pre-production for season 5, which will be with you in the Autumn,” said Capps. “We’re locked in a room with with all writers working out how we’re going to do the next 13 episodes. We’ve got some great ideas and some great twists and turns.”

With Doctor Who also returning this Autumn, it will be interesting to see how the BBC schedule both shows.

Shooting on the new series is set to begin March.

Sci-Fi Bulletin interviewed Angel on set of Merlin Season 2 while filming the episode 2.08 The Sins of the Father.

Are you going to get together with Merlin?
No, I’m not unfortunately. That was a storyline at the beginning that’s faded away a little bit. Initially I had a bit of a crush on Merlin, and maybe he did have a bit of a crush on me, but it was never really made clear. We never talked about it, and now we’re just friends.
I might be getting together with someone, but it’s a very slow process. The relationship between me and Arthur begins to develop a little bit during this series.

Were there other things in the first series that started one way and then went differently?
That was probably the main thing in my storyline. Also my relationship with Arthur, there was nothing. It was to be expected that it was going to develop at some stage, but right at the beginning there was no relationship whatsoever. We barely spoke to each other – I don’t think we had any scenes together for ages. Then right at the end, we started to notice each other a little bit more. In episode 10, we all leave Camelot and are on more common ground, and at that point he begins to see Gwen’s bravery and stuff like that.

How much input have you had into Gwen’s development?
We have a good relationship with the producers and the writers. We don’t often get to see the writers, but we have a very honest relationship with the producers. and we’re quite often allowed to dispute things if we don’t agree with the way things are going. They don’t always listen to us, but sometimes they do.
In general, it’s nice to see they’re writing a bit more for me, now they’ve got to know me. Initially Gwen was queen of foot in mouth – she often said things she didn’t really mean to say and then get all embarrassed about it and flustered. She does that a bit less now; she’s a bit more controlled, which is a bit more me.
